Character Counts
Perhaps what is hardest in life is developing a truly
rounded perspective on what is important in life. This
struggle is never easily won nor does it remain in your
hands without hard work. Preparing yourself and your
children requires a commitment to learning and adapting
your entire life.
It is perhaps hardest for people to understand that no
program covers all of the bases to develop a person in
emotional, intellectual, physical and moral skills. To
think that it is so is perhaps overly optimistic. But
there are many programs that do cover many areas and
represent a better foundation to begin with. Scouting is
such a program.
My work with Scouting has shown that some very basic
values, family, education, physical fitness, religion and
morals, are developed in this program. Not only is this
accomplished for the youth in the program, it is
reinforced in the adults delivering the program.
My involvement, from a youth earning the highest
honors in Cub and Boy Scouts, to an adult actively
supporting the program, I have come to a position to lead
insightful discussions on the values that are needed in
developing a better society. If you have concerns about
these types of issues, consider inviting me in to talk
about what you can do, in and out of a Scouting program.
